Helping Children

Gaining more knowledge about the children suffering from heart problems in Ukraine, and the lack of proper facilities and equipment necessary to carry out the required treatment, has prompted us to work closely with the EurAsia Heart Foundation to seek a solution. EurAsia Heart is a group of European doctors that is run by Swiss surgeons and offers international cooperation on a voluntary basis in Eastern Europe and Asia.

Heart specialists from the EurAsia Heart Foundation have been providing their services and helping Ukrainian children for a couple of years already. However, inadequate medical equipment and facilities impeded doctors from operating in Ukraine.

Taking this obstacle into consideration, the Slavic Foundation saw its role. At the Davos World Economic Forum in January 2008, the Slavic Foundation was able to orchestrate meetings between Swiss cardio surgeon and founder of the EurAsia Heart Foundation, Prof. MD Paul Vogt, founder of the Widenmoos Business Club, Fredie Buhler, and Ukraine´s First Lady and head of the supervisory board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund, Kateryna Yuschenko.

The meetings resulted in further trilateral cooperation between the Slavic Foundation, the EurAsia Heart Foundation, and the Ukraine 3000 Charitable Fund with the aim of providing and ensuring adequate treatment and necessary surgeries for Ukrainian children with difficult heart pathologies.

A memorandum of collaboration was signed between the Slavic Foundation, the EurAsia Heart Foundation, and the International Charitable Fund Ukraine 3000 on December 3, 2007. This agreement set out several initiatives including, inter alia, the following (i) aid, in the form of medical (cardio surgical) equipment, to be provided to the children's hospital "Okhmatdyt" in L'viv, Ukraine, and (ii) further reconstruction and modernization of children's hospital "Okhmatdyt".

In addition, while the L'viv hospital will undergo the necessary changes to permit an expansion of its facilities, six Ukrainian children will be flown to Zurich, Switzerland to provide them with the opportunity to have life saving heart surgery performed. Prof. Paul Vogt, of the EurAsia Heart Foundation, personally examined the children in L'viv and kindly offered to perform the surgeries for the children on a pro-bono basis. The Slavic Foundation will cover all the additional costs of transportation, accommodation, and visa preparation for the children and their parents.
